We call our senior operators strategoi, and the word is about doing the work, not decoration.
The Athenian strategos was elected, accountable, and led from the front — expected to read the whole field, understand the competing forces, decide, and answer personally for what happened next. Strategy has since been reduced to planning, workshops and documents produced by people who have never carried the risk of being wrong. We use the older definition because it’s the more honest one.

What a strategos actually is
A strategos has experience wide enough to move across a business without pretending to be its foremost expert in any single function; operations, growth, finance, narrative, people, markets, incentives, and how those things collide under pressure. When real depth is needed; technology, capital markets, regulatory, communications, data; a strategos knows exactly who to bring in for a surgical one- or two-week sprint, and exactly when to send them home again.
Roughly three engagements in five run with a single embedded strategos. Four in five operate as one- to three-person teams of specialists. We build the smallest team capable of changing the outcome, not the largest team we can bill.
We could tell you our team came from the "Big 4" or McKinsey. Some did. It would be the wrong reason to hire us.
What we’re selling instead is pattern recognition earned the hard way. A strategos has been down the pit you’re currently standing in more than once and knows the way out because they’ve walked it, not because they wrote a case study about someone else walking it.
Outsider, on purpose.
A strategos enters as a temporary outsider deliberately. Insiders inherit the incentives, the history and the political debts that produced the problem in the first place — which is precisely why they usually can’t see it clearly. An embedded strategos owes nothing to the org chart, has no career riding on the next promotion cycle, and can say the thing everyone in the room already knows but nobody with a stake in the outcome can afford to say out loud.
